KASHAYANGAL - 5 Varieties
1. SvarasaThe freshly prepared drug is washed thoroughly and is squeezed through a thin cloth after crushing. The juice thus obtained is known as Svarasa (Juice.
2.Kalka
The fleshy or fresh drug with sap, ground well in a stone mortar till it turns fine pasty form, is kalka. (Paste).
3.Kwatha (Decoction)
The drugs after washing thoroughly, crushed,cooked in water and made into one fourth the quantity of water.
4.Hima
Crushed drugs are kept in boiled and cooled water for a night and filtered through a fine cloth on the next day. The juice thus obtained is hima kashaya.
5.Phanta (Decoction)
Dried drugs are crushed well and added to boiling water. The juice obtained is used after filtering through a fine cloth.
Raw drugs,cereals,tubers,roots of plants, thorns etc are used for making the kashayas. Thus in order to preserve the medicinal property of these, 60 g of the drugs are cooked in 768 ml of water and made into 96 ml. The juice is filtered through a fine cloth and is used. This juice is commonly called as kashaya.
ARISHTA - AASAVANGAL
The juice which obtain after keeping crushed drugs in liquids for a long period is commonly known as asava- arishtas. The liquid may be water or decoction of drugs

Arishta:Drugs are kept in decoctions.
THAILANGAL
Kalka (Paste), Taila (Oil), Svarasa (Juice) or Kwatha (Decoction) are the ingredients needed to prepare a taila. Taila taken is the four times the quantity of kalka. Either svarasa or kashaya is taken four times the quantity of taila and cooked in low flame. It is made into kalkapaka and filtered before use.
GRITHANGAL (Cow's ghee)
Kalka is taken four times the quantity of ghee. Kwatha or milk or svarasa is taken four times that of ghee. This is then cooked under low flame, made into kalkapaka and filtered through a fine cloth before use.

CHOORNAGAL
All drugs mentioned under a yoga is dried well under sunlight. Then they are crushed well and filtered through a cloth to obtain fine powder. This is choorna.
BHASMANGAL
Bhasmas are prepared by incinerating the metals or minerals which are obtained from earth after purifying them in the proper manner.
PILLS - (Vatika)
Gudika, Vati, Modaka, Vatika, Pindi, Guda, Varti etc are synonymous with gutika. Gutikas are prepared by adding fine powder of drugs to jaggery, sugar or guggulu after preparing them on fire.
